Equality PA Endorses Judicial Candidates

Harrisburg – Equality PA is proud to announce the endorsement of outstanding judicial candidates. All of these candidates have a record of involvement with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and familiarity with the issues that face the LGBT community.

The Equality PA endorsed candidates running for election on November 3, 2015 are as follows:

– Christine Donohue – Supreme Court
– Kevin Dougherty – Supreme Court
– David Wecht – Supreme Court

– Dan Clifford – Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas
– Abbe Fletman – Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas
– Chris Mallios – Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas
– Hugh McGough – Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas
– Mia Roberts Perez – Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas
– Michael Wojcik – Commonwealth Court

Executive Director of Equality PA, Ted Martin, explained the reasoning behind the endorsements in this critical race, “Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people want to be treated fairly and equally by the laws of the commonwealth. That’s why we carefully chose judicial candidates to endorse. We believe that they will set a high standard for fairness, integrity, and justice in Pennsylvania.”

Courts can play a critical role in the lives of LGBT people.

The history of the state courts in Pennsylvania has not been favorable in the past on legislation regarding LGBT rights. In 2002 the state legislature passed a law to include LGBT people in hate crimes protections. That law was overturned in 2007 on a technical issue in the state courts. As a result, LGBT people still do not have hate crimes protections in Pennsylvania. However, on the national level, the courts have been instrumental in ensuring that all loving couples have the freedom to marry in the past year.
