Equality Pennsylvania Celebrates Historic Leadership from the Department of Treasury, Recommits to the Work Ahead

Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ruled that same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes. The ruling applies regardless of whether the couple lives in a jurisdiction that recognizes same-sex marriage or a jurisdiction that does not recognize same-sex marriage.

In response to this announcement, Ted Martin, executive director of Equality Pennsylvania, released the following statement:

“Since the Supreme Court struck down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the Obama Administration has shown historic leadership, evaluating all federal policies and taking critical steps to ensure that all legally married couples have equal protection under the law.

To be sure, this ruling is a tremendous and historic step forward, and across Pennsylvania, thousands of loving, committed same-sex couples are celebrating.

While this is a day of celebration, we know we have more work to do. Pennsylvania still treats gay and lesbian citizens and their children as unequal and second-class. Couples are denied the freedom to marry, and hardworking, responsible Pennsylvanians can still be fired or denied a mortgage simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As we rejoice in today’s victory, we recommit to telling our stories, changing hearts and minds, and winning respect and dignity under the law.”
