PNC Backs PA Non-discrimination Bill – HB/SB 300

Bill has Significant Business Support Around the State

Harrisburg – Equality PA Vice President of the Board, Michael Testa commended The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. for their support of HB 300/SB 300 today. The bills amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act by prohibiting discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

“After working with leaders at PNC to explain the significance of HB 300/SB 300, the state’s non-discrimination bill, we are thrilled that they are showing leadership by supporting this important legislation,” Testa said.  “Equality PA sincerely thanks PNC for recognizing that all people in PA deserve to be treated equally.”

Testa continued, saying, “Discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is real in 2013 and it must be stopped. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that everyone should have equal opportunity and a level playing field. PNC has been a role model for equal opportunity for LGBT people in the state.” PNC is rated as a “Best Place to Work” for LGBT people by the Human Rights Campaign and has a department committed to Diversity and Inclusion for employees and customers.

HB 300 and its counter part in the Senate, SB 300, have broad bipartisan support among legislators, businesses, and voters. In the business community, PNC joins other business leaders including Alcoa, American Eagle Outfitters, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, Pittsburgh Technology Council, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Sellers Dorsey in supporting HB 300/SB 300. The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce also support HB 300/SB 300.

Both bills have bipartisan prime sponsors and the House bill has 93 co-sponsors including 12 Republicans. In a poll commissioned by Equality PA and done by Susquehanna Polling and Research in March of 2013 of both Democratic and Republican voters, respondents supported a non-discrimination bill in Pennsylvania by a margin of 72%.
