TAKE ACTION: Protect CHIP from Transgender Exclusions

Harrisburg lawmakers are once again playing politics with our rights — and now they’ve targeted transgender youth. They have attached an amendment to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) reauthorization bill that would deny access to trans-related services to those covered under CHIP – which covers PA’s most vulnerable youth up to age 19. Please take a moment and follow the three steps below to send a clear message to stop playing anti-trans politics with children’s health!

Senator Donald White has attached an amendment that would restrict coverage for trans-related care for youth up to age 19 under the widely successful Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).  CHIP provides insurance coverage to uninsured children and teens up to age 19 whose families earn too much to qualify for Medical Assistance, but who cannot afford to purchase private insurance.  In Pennsylvania, there are over 174,000 children currently enrolled in CHIP.

The amendment picks on our most vulnerable children and denies them vital medical care.  According to our friends at the National Center for Transgender Equality, the proposed amendment would also put our PA CHIP program in violation of federal law.

We need you to do THREE things to help prevent this from moving forward:
  1. Take 2 minutes and send a message to your elected officials in Harrisburg that you oppose this amendment by completing the form found at this link.
  2. Call your State Senator (Get contact information by clicking here) and tell them you oppose any amendment to the CHIP Reauthorization Bill and that providing health coverage to our state’s most vulnerable children is not something to play politics with.
  3. Call State Senator Jake Corman at (717) 787-1377 or (814) 355-0477  and urge him to keep any restrictive amendments OFF the CHIP reauthorization bill.
