Led by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) the U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS) is the largest survey ever devoted to the lives and experiences of trans people and this year the survey had 27,715 respondents. It allows us to better understand the day-to-day challenges that so many in our community are facing.

It’s undeniable the trans people have made significant strides in recent years with more visiblity in society and culture. But, despite increased visibility, there are still many challenges transgender people face in everyday life and encounters. And, sadly there are countless tragedies happening every day to members of our community.

These findings are an invaluable tool in educating people about what it means to be a transgender person. And the findings reveal disparities between transgender people and the general population about the most basic elements of life such as finding a job, having a place to live, accessing appropriate medical care, and enjoying the support of family and community. It’s important that we educate America in an accurate way. We can fight prejudice and stereotypes with facts—and with the real-life stories that are behind the data.

Take a look at the results of the survey here and please share widely!

Equality PA remains committed to fighting for equality for everyone in the LGBT community, and this survey will be invaluable in our work to educate the public about the real experience for trans people in our state.
