Where do we go from here?

Statement from Ted Martin, Executive Director, Equality PA on the election aftermath:

First and foremost, we could not be more thrilled to congratulate our new Governor Tom Wolf. Tom Wolf will not just be an equality supporter, he will be an equality champion!

Secondly, many of our Republican and Democratic co-sponsors of HB/SB 300, Pennsylvania’s nondiscrimination bills, survived challenging elections.

However, as many of you saw last night we lost a number of allies in both the state House and the Senate which, to be completely honest, will make it challenging to pass any legislation advancing equality next year.

That’s why we are getting right back to work today to do what we need to do to win.

We hope that you will join us by supporting our work to advance equality as we face this uphill battle.

That said, I would have never guessed that I would be talking about passing legislation in a year where both gubernatorial candidates agreed to sign our highest priority bills, where a list of over 75 candidates stood up for LGBT equailty, and in a year where we have marriage equality in Pennsylvania. We can’t just look at what we lost last night, we must look at all we have gained this year.

It will be difficult to make progress next year, but it is not impossible. We just need your commitment to make sure we have the resources to do the ground work that must get done to persuade a majority of legislators on both sides of the aisle to do the right thing.

We can’t stop the fight now. We have already come so far.

With your help we will win in the end.

We get back to work today, knowing that with your help, full LGBT equality is only a matter of time.
